Roll back the years and reminisce in the nostalgia of a pastime held dear to the hearts of thousands of Maldivians throughout thousands of islands. With a game older than our roots yet shaped by our own unique and wonderful touch, the game of Mancala better known as ‘Laagulha kulhun’ is a time honoured tradition and hobby passed down from our forefathers. Played on a board usually carved from wood, known as ‘Ovvalhu gondi’, this humble piece of wood with scooped pockets carved on either side sets the stage for a game of wits and strategy. Traditionally played using the seeds of the ‘kashikunburu’ tree, which is known as ‘laagulha’ and is believed to be where the game’s name originates from, can be replaced with any form of stones or beads, with objective of capturing all of your opponents pieces. We at Mvlacquer however, have brought about a change that elevates this humble playing experience by supplying our customers with cowrie shells for that extra bit of finesse. Our boards are also made precise to order using robust and sturdy wood with varying measurements of length and width depending on the type of board you wish to acquire.
